A New Chapter Begins on the Cheat River

After 25 years of planning and persistence, one of West Virginia’s newest outdoor destinations is officially open.

The first three-mile section of the Cheat River Rail-Trail is welcoming hikers, cyclists, runners, and anyone looking to experience the stunning Cheat River corridor from a new perspective. Featuring a wide packed gravel surface and scenic river views, the trail offers easy access to one of the Mountain State’s most beloved recreation areas.

But this project is about much more than a trail.

Led by Friends of the Cheat, the 8.5-mile rail-trail is part of a larger effort to reconnect communities with the Cheat River while supporting conservation, outdoor recreation, tourism, and local economic development. Years of collaboration and investment have transformed a long-held vision into a destination that will continue to grow in the years ahead.

The new Cheat River Trailhead provides accessible parking, visitor amenities, and a welcoming starting point for exploring the corridor, making it easier than ever to discover this remarkable stretch of Preston County.
