The Bike Shop That Stuck: How Hammer Cycles Built More Than a Business in Lewisburg

Hosted by: Ben Isenberg & Clay Elkins
  • Podcast

Eleven or twelve bike shops have come and gone in Lewisburg by some counts — each one closing before the next could find footing. Max Hammer knew the history going in. He also knew that Greenbrier Valley riders were driving two and a half hours round trip for parts, service, and bikes that actually fit. So he opened Hammer Cycles anyway, and built something different from the start.

What makes the difference, Max says, isn’t just the inventory or the service quality. It’s the community around it. Hammer Cycles is home base for the Greenbrier Valley Hellbenders, a NICA affiliate youth mountain biking team that has put kids on trails and kept them coming back season after season. Max leads group rides, mentors beginners, and runs a shop where nobody gets talked down to walking through the door. That combination earned a Small Business of the Year nomination from the Greenbrier Valley Chamber of Commerce — recognition that reflects something bigger than any single transaction. A bike shop that sticks isn’t just a retail business. It’s infrastructure.
